Viscosupplementation

A treatment that involves injecting a gel-like substance (hyaluronic acid) into a joint to supplement the natural synovial fluid, improving lubrication and cushioning.

Extended Definition

Viscosupplementation is a minimally invasive procedure primarily used to treat knee osteoarthritis, though it can be used in other joints as well. The treatment aims to restore the natural properties of synovial fluid that have been diminished by arthritis.

During the procedure, a healthcare provider injects hyaluronic acid directly into the joint space using a needle. This substance mimics the consistency of healthy synovial fluid, providing better lubrication between joint surfaces and acting as a shock absorber during movement. The treatment may also have anti-inflammatory effects and might stimulate the body’s own production of hyaluronic acid.

Different viscosupplementation products are available, varying in their molecular weight, concentration, and treatment schedules. Some require a series of 3-5 weekly injections, while others like Synvisc-One are administered as a single injection. The effects typically last several months, and the treatment can be repeated if beneficial. Many patients experience reduced pain and improved function, though results vary from person to person.
