How Kaiser Handles Viscosupplementation

Kaiser’s integrated model works differently from other insurers:

  • Your Kaiser doctor decides whether viscosupplementation is appropriate
  • No external prior authorization process (it is handled internally)
  • Treatment is performed at Kaiser facilities by Kaiser physicians
  • Brand selection is determined by Kaiser’s pharmacy and therapeutics committee

This means you cannot see an outside provider and bill Kaiser. All care goes through the Kaiser system.

Integrated Care

Kaiser’s integrated model means your doctor orders the treatment directly. There is no separate insurance approval process, which can mean faster access to treatment.

Requirements

Your Kaiser care team will consider viscosupplementation if:

  1. Knee X-rays show osteoarthritis
  2. You have tried conservative treatments through Kaiser:
    • Physical therapy
    • Medications (NSAIDs, acetaminophen)
    • Activity modification
  3. Your symptoms have not improved adequately
  4. Your doctor determines you are a good candidate

What You Will Pay

Plan TypeTypical Cost
Standard HMOSpecialist copay ($30-$60)
Deductible planCost applied to deductible
Medicare (Senior Advantage)Medicare cost-sharing

Kaiser’s in-system pricing is typically lower than outside providers because Kaiser controls the full treatment chain.

How to Request Viscosupplementation

  1. Talk to your primary care doctor about your knee pain
  2. Get a referral to Kaiser orthopedics or pain management
  3. Complete recommended conservative treatments
  4. Discuss viscosupplementation with your Kaiser orthopedist
  5. If recommended, your doctor schedules the injection

Kaiser Only

You cannot get viscosupplementation from an outside provider and have Kaiser cover it. All treatment must be arranged through your Kaiser care team.

Frequently Asked Questions

What brands does Kaiser use?

Kaiser selects products based on their internal formulary. You may not have a choice of brand, but Kaiser’s selections are FDA-approved and clinically effective.

Can I request a specific HA brand?

You can discuss preferences with your doctor, but Kaiser’s pharmacy committee determines which products are available. The clinical effectiveness of major brands is comparable.

What if my Kaiser doctor does not recommend viscosupplementation?

Ask for the clinical reasoning and whether a second opinion within Kaiser is appropriate. You can also ask about other treatment options for your knee OA.
