TRICARE Physical Therapy Coverage

TRICARE Prime

  • Referral required from your Primary Care Manager to see a physical therapist
  • Military treatment facilities offer PT as a first option
  • Civilian PT available with proper referral if MTF cannot provide care
  • Cost sharing is minimal with in-network providers

TRICARE Select

  • No referral required for in-network physical therapists
  • Direct access allows you to schedule directly with a PT
  • Higher cost sharing if using out-of-network providers
  • Prior authorization not needed for routine PT

TRICARE Select Advantage

TRICARE Select members can go directly to a physical therapist without a referral. This means faster access to PT when you need it for joint pain.

VA Physical Therapy Coverage

The VA provides comprehensive physical therapy services for enrolled veterans.

How to Access VA PT

  1. Talk to your VA primary care provider about your joint pain
  2. Get a consult to the VA physical therapy department
  3. Schedule your PT sessions at your local VA facility
  4. Complete your treatment plan as recommended by your therapist

VA Community Care for PT

If your VA facility has long wait times or is too far away, you may qualify for Community Care:

  • Wait time exceeds VA standards (usually 20 days for new appointments)
  • Drive time exceeds 30 minutes to the nearest VA PT clinic
  • Service not available at your VA facility
  • Your VA provider determines Community Care is in your best medical interest

TRICARE Prime retiree$12 per visit
TRICARE Select in-network$25 per visit
TRICARE Select out-of-networkHigher percentage

Active duty service members pay nothing for PT at military facilities. VA copays depend on your priority group and whether the condition is service-connected.

Visit Limits

TRICARE

TRICARE does not set a strict number of PT visits. However, your treatment plan should show ongoing medical necessity. Extended courses of PT may require documentation of progress and continued need.

VA

The VA determines visit frequency based on clinical judgment. Your PT and physician will create a treatment plan tailored to your condition. There is no fixed cap, but treatment must remain medically necessary.

Keep Making Progress

Both TRICARE and VA expect measurable improvement from PT. Your therapist will document your progress, which supports continued coverage. Do your home exercises to maximize results.

Tips for Service Members and Veterans

  1. Active duty: Use your military treatment facility PT department first
  2. TRICARE Prime: Get a PCM referral before scheduling civilian PT
  3. TRICARE Select: Take advantage of direct access to in-network PTs
  4. VA veterans: Ask your primary care provider for a PT consult
  5. Do your home exercises between sessions for the best outcomes
  6. Track your progress with your therapist to support continued coverage
