VA Coverage

The VA provides viscosupplementation at most medical centers:

  • Ordered by your VA orthopedist or pain management specialist
  • No separate insurance authorization needed within the VA
  • Product selection determined by VA formulary
  • No cost for most enrolled veterans

How to Access at the VA

  1. Talk to your primary care provider about knee pain
  2. Get a referral to VA orthopedics or pain management
  3. Complete conservative treatments recommended by your team
  4. Discuss viscosupplementation with your VA specialist
  5. Treatment is scheduled at your VA medical center

Community Care Option

If your local VA does not offer viscosupplementation or wait times are long:

  • VA Community Care may authorize treatment with a local provider
  • Your VA care team must approve the Community Care referral
  • No additional cost beyond your normal VA copay

Do Not Self-Refer

VA Community Care must be arranged through your VA care team. Seeing an outside provider without VA authorization means you pay the full cost.

TRICARE For Life Members

If you have TRICARE For Life (age 65+ with Medicare):

  • Medicare is the primary payer for viscosupplementation
  • TRICARE For Life covers your Medicare deductible and coinsurance
  • Your out-of-pocket cost is typically $0
  • Prior authorization still needed through TRICARE
