Aetna’s Position on Stem Cells

Aetna publishes detailed Clinical Policy Bulletins (CPBs) explaining coverage decisions. For stem cell therapy:

  • CPB classifies orthopedic stem cell use as experimental
  • No distinction between autologous (your own cells) and allogeneic (donor) stem cells
  • Amniotic tissue injections are also considered experimental
  • Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) for joints is not covered

This policy applies whether the stem cells come from bone marrow, fat tissue, or any other source.
